Film Locations in Lesotho

WHAT OUR LOCAL FILM FIXERS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT FILMING IN LESOTHO, SOUTHERN AFRICA

Lesotho is located in southern Africa and is an enclave in South Africa, so it is bordered by South Africa to the north, south, east, and west.

In the highland of Lesotho, it snows in the winter months between June to August and it gets freezing cold! The summers between December and February are long, hot, and rainy. The nest time to film in this region is October / November, or March / April.

Sotho and English are the official languages of Lesotho

The Lesotho loti (LSL) is the official currency of the Kingdom of Lesotho. South African Rand (ZAR) is accepted in Lesotho, however you may receive change in the local Lesotho currency. There is limited acceptance of credit cards and foreign currency can be exchanged for local currency.

Lesotho is generally considered a safe country to travel to. However, even though it has served as a safe haven and a sanctuary from all the troubles that are hitting the rest of Africa pretty hard – Lesotho also has its issues with crime, both petty and violent, illnesses and poverty.

The road system is underdeveloped and only a few roads are paved. The main highway which runs through the towns from north to south is tarred. Taxis and minibus taxis are readily available and a viable option for short distances. Car hire is also an option.

There are a number of good film friendly hotels with daily rates between $120 and $200 per person per night.

There is currently no tax incentives and rebates available to film in Lesotho.
